Abbots Hill School production of Anastasia

Last week, on 17, 18 and 20 June 2014, over 180 pupils took to the stage in the Judi Dench Theatre for five sell-out performances of Anastasia - a colourful musical filled with dancing, singing and drama. There were superb performances from Years 5, 6, 7 and 8, many of whom have never acted in a large production before.

The musical was an adaption of the 1997 American animated film, based on the urban legend claiming that the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II, in fact survived the execution of her family. It tells the story of an eighteen year old orphan named Anya who, in hopes of finding some trace of her family, sides with a pair of con men who wish to take advantage of her likeness to the Grand Duchess.

The design aspects of the production were colourful and uncomplicated to ensure that the focus was on the performers. Director, Miss Gimmi said, I really challenged the cast with the in the round staging and complicated song and dance routines. As always, we strive to offer as many girls as possible the opportunity to take centre stage, so we had an amazing 14 different actors playing the part of the young Princess Anastasia, seven Vladimirs and two Rasuptins!
In addition each class had their own scene, which they either wrote or adapted themselves. For the really enthusiastic performers, there were extra appearances for members of Drama Club.

Head of Drama, Mrs Hindmarsh said, The girls were all fantastic and it was a marvellous opportunity for the Prep School to collaborate with the Senior School. We are all extremely proud of what we have achieved and I am very grateful for the support of all the pupils, staff and parents in making this possible.
