Nepal ‘Tree of Money’

Published on isbi School News dated Friday 10th of July 2015

Students and staff at St Benedict’s School in Ealing have raised £1345 in support of victims of the recent earthquake in Nepal. The money will go to Kidasha, a charity working with children in the region. On Tuesday 30th June a giant tree appeared in the Cloisters Hall, spreading its branches right across the floor. This ‘Tree of Money’ was gradually covered with coins during the day. Fresh branches and leaves had to be added to accommodate the unexpectedly large amount of money brought in. The Nepal Tree, designed by Mrs Vicki Dale, was the initiative of the school’s Eco Council, supported by Mrs Linda David and Mrs Selina Smith, the Environment Coordinators in the Junior and Senior Schools. They were delighted with the generous response: “The Nepal Tree involved the whole school from the youngest Reception children right through to the oldest Sixth Formers and also the staff. There was a wonderful buzz about this whole event and we are overwhelmed by the effort the children had put in to raise this amount of money.” Janice Miller from the charity Kidasha was also delighted. She wrote back to say: “Thank you for your feedback on your fundraising day, the result of which is amazing and raised far more than I had anticipated. I can’t say how much I appreciate the effort that everyone put into the day.” Kidasha is a development charity dedicated to supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people in Nepal, one of Asia's poorest and least developed countries. Their vision is a world where all children have equality of opportunity. Kidasha works to improve the wellbeing of the most marginalised children, to support their development and to reduce the impact of social injustice, reaching more than 50,000 children and mothers each year.
