Empty classroom day

Published on isbi School News dated Monday 10th of August 2015

On Friday 19 June, thousands of children up and down the country celebrated 'Empty Classroom Day'. The idea originated in a small cluster of London schools, and has grown very rapidly over the past three years. The idea is simple: on Empty Classroom Day, every class in the country is encouraged to spend one lesson learning outside. Here at Dunhurst, we decided to base the whole day down in Outdoor Work. It was a beautifully sunny day and every class in the school joined in – with some classes spending several lessons outside! It was a real hive of activity and there were often 80+ children and staff using a variety of outdoor spaces; art in the chicken run, English and maths in the roundhouse, Design Technology in the vegetable plot, humanities around the campfire, textiles, drama and science on the grass - French lessons used the whole site for a treasure hunt!
