On Saturday 19th September, St Benedict’s 1st XV kicked off the season with a thumping 52 – 7 away win against Glyn School from Ewell, Surrey. Eight tries were scored with Centre Harry Hanley and Lock Ehize Ehizode getting a brace each, and six conversions added. A week later, at home to St George’s, Weybridge, Bennies won 46 – 10. George’s competed strongly up to half-time with the Ealing boys only 10 – 5 up, but after that the Bennies’ backs stepped up several gears and scored six more tries. Centre Harry Hanley contributed four, with a brace each from Winger Matthew Ilube and Full Back Pierre Goualin. The joint Man of the Match Award went to Fly Half Ben Chippendale and Lock Ehize Ehizode. Chippendale moved from Centre to fly half after half-time to cover the injured Will Taylor. Coaches and players had been busy pre-season with a six day tour to the West Country, based at Bath University, from Monday 31st August to Saturday 5th September. The players were put through a well-planned week of activities including strength and conditioning sessions, skill development sessions and video analysis work. “With a new squad of players alongside a new coaching set up, we felt it really important that we remove the players from the current environment,” said James Coles, Director of Rugby. “This then allowed us to create a very specific culture of expectations which the boys could take ownership of and lead into the season.” St Benedict’s also played two very competitive fixtures on tour. A 34-17 win over Chippenham RFC was followed up with a resounding 50-7 victory over Prior Park College.
