New St Swithun's Junior School
Pupils and staff at St Swithun's Junior School are enjoying the outstanding new facilities in their brand new building on the Alresford Road site.
The new school replaces the existing school buildings and, among many other things, enables the Junior School to have smaller class sizes. The development includes specialist teaching rooms, a science laboratory, an art studio, a media/computing room and, in the next phase, a new performing arts space and gym.
The new school main building is now open. The new performing arts space and gym will open in Easter 2016. In the meantime our pupils will use the existing hall and gym
The new junior school is a light, bright, modern space; it is a wonderful environment for both children and staff. The building is flooded with natural light and the huge expanses of glass allow us to look out over trees and fields. Internally the building has been designed with light wood finishes, oak floors and white walls giving a feeling of light and space; the domestic bursar and the design team have sourced modern furniture that compliments the space. The aim has been to move away from the traditional look of a junior school and to install furniture that is contemporary; the palette of blues and muted colours is softer than the usual primary colours used. The furnishings are age appropriate to help learning to be a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
The library which is in the heart of the school is particularly inspiring; the bespoke curved shelving and soft seating will allow the children to access the books easily. The calm atmosphere pervades the whole school.
Outdoors the school is surrounded by beautiful naturalistic planting; through the floor to ceiling glass we can see the grasses and verbena blowing in the win, the scent of the lavender and rosemary comes into the school through the open windows. If we look out further we can see the new sports courts and the playing fields beyond.
