Janice Watson Masterclass
Hot on the heels of its PF Rocks! night, the Music Department was delighted to welcome world-class soprano Janice Watson for a recital and public masterclass, on Tuesday 1 March.
The evening began with Janice giving a 20 minute recital, including works by Sibelius, Flanders and Swann, and contemporary songs by pianist and composer Geoff Westley who provided piano accompaniment. Then came the moment for four fortunate Prior’s Field pupils to participate in Janice’s masterclass. The girls performed songs by Caccini, Vivaldi, Mozart and Puccini and learned a huge amount about technique and interpretation, coming away greatly inspired.
It was also wonderful to welcome back to Prior’s Field Old Girl Clare Aldrich, who graduated from the University of York last year with a First-class honours degree in Music. Clare dazzled the audience with a French aria, Je Veux Vivre, from Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette.
Head of Music, Trevor Pratt, comments: “We are very grateful to Janice for sharing her experience, expertise and time with our current and former pupils. After the success of this evening, and also the visit to Prior’s Field by Nicola Benedetti last year, we are planning to host regular masterclasses. They will be a feature of a brand new concert series to be launched after autumn 2016, when the development of the school’s new Music, Science and Technology centre will be complete.”
With the opening of the new centre, the Music Department will benefit from an eighty seat, fully acoustic recital hall – the perfect setting for masterclasses – as well as eight new practice rooms, theory classrooms and a recording studio.Published: March 16 2016
