The Elite Sports Programme at Bishop's Stortford College

Published on isbi School News dated Thursday 29th of September 2016

Bishop’s Stortford College launched their Elite Sports Programme at the beginning of the Autumn term, which provides additional training opportunities for Sports Scholars at the College. The programme is specifically designed to enhance the coaching already available in the College’s core sports, using their state-of-the-art facilities. Scholars benefit from regular masterclasses and training sessions from professional and international sportspeople, which have already had a huge impact on their individual skills development. A mentoring system provides tailored advice on strength and conditioning, as well as nutrition and diet. The new fitness centre at the College is also proving very popular, where pupils work hard on their new strength and conditioning plans, with expert guidance from qualified staff. In the first four weeks of term, Sports Scholars have enjoyed professional masterclasses from elite players and coaches in Cricket, Hockey, Netball and Rugby. Team GB Olympic gold medallists Shona McCallin and Hollie Webb, as well as GB Hockey Goalkeeper Amy Gibson, were welcomed by the College for pre-season girls’ hockey training. The girls were excited to work with Olympians, and received invaluable training and advice. The boys’ U16 indoor hockey team, who reached the National Indoor Hockey Finals last year, took part in a coaching session with England men’s indoor coach, Andy Halliday. The two hour session covered a number of fundamental skills, including individual technical tips. Elite netballers learned new drills and skills with England Goal Shooter Jo Harten, and Level 4 Cricket Coach and Old Stortfordian Luke Humphrey will be running regular nets sessions with College cricketers throughout the winter. College Rugby players have enjoyed expert coaching from former England hooker Andy Long, and Saracens Academy Coach James Tirrell, whilst the elite swimmers continue to enjoy the expertise of Bishop’s Stortford Swimming Club’s Head Coach, Benoit Grattepanche. Lyndsay Shepherd, Director of Sports at the College, comments: ‘I am delighted that we have already been able to provide our elite sportsmen and women with so many incredible training opportunities. They have approached the new programme with great enthusiasm and I very much hope that it will prove invaluable in their long-term sporting development.’
