Music Maestros! Two ACS Egham students take part in first ever Steinway & Sons piano masterclass
ACS Egham International School students, Ileeana Johnson and Nick Wong, aged 17 and 18, were awarded two of just six places at the first ever Steinway & Sons sponsored piano masterclass at Steinway Hall, located in Marylebone, London.
The day included a masterclass with Charles Owen, Steinway artist, a tour of Steinway Hall and the restoration centre, plus an opportunity for the students to play on the Steinway’s world famous, concert grand pianos.
“I am a passionate musician and this chance to learn directly from a master concert pianist at Steinway Hall was a truly once in a lifetime experience. I performed ‘On the Ruins of Bibihanim’ by D Amanullayeva, a favourite piece of mine.”
A remarkably talented musician, Ileeana recently performed in The Association for Music in International Schools’ (AMIS) annual Young Composers’ competition, where she was ‘highly commended’ for her own composition, Under the Weather, one of just two pieces to gain this recognition.
Nick performed the first movement of Beethoven’s Sonata in C minor. After attending the masterclass, Nick went on to perform at the Marlow Festival of Music and Drama, winning a silver medal playing Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in D minor.
Irina Walters, ACS Egham Music Coordinator, commented:
“We are all very proud of Illeeana and Nick for their fantastic performances and I am thrilled that they had the opportunity to learn from Charles Owen, one of the finest British pianists. Nick achieving a silver medal at Marlow Festival was the perfect ending to a very memorable day.”Published: December 2 2016
