Watch Out Wimbledon , Here Come The Witley Girls!
Watch out Wimbledon, the Girls’ Senior Tennis Squad from King Edward’s Witley is on fire having just reached the knock out stage of the Lawn Tennis Association’s (LTA) Schools Team Tennis Schools’ Competition.
The success in this major competition (the Aegon LTA National Schools Team Tennis Competition) is even more commendable when you consider the fact that the players from King Edward’s have gone from a zero rating to achieving above a high club or county standard tennis rating - in an incredible 12 weeks!
The girls - Elisabet, Maria, Elena and Darina – are a mixture of Lower Sixth Form and Upper Sixth Form pupils at King Edward’s, where tennis has been earmarked as a sport with significant growth potential. King Edward’s Witley is now an LTA registered tennis club with the ability to run ratings matches – and even win tickets to sacred Wimbledon, the oldest tennis tournament in the world and considered to be the most prestigious. As a registered LTA club, all pupils at King Edward’s also have access to free British Tennis Membership with the LTA.
The King Edward’s team has already seen off some fierce competition to make it through to the last 20 in the UK (they have won three matches out of three in the round robin stage against much bigger well established clubs) and next February they will take their place on court to try and make it through to the last eight. The ultimate final will be held in March 2017.
Commenting on the King Edward’s girls’ success, Mr Jim Langan, Head of Tennis, said, “We are so proud of our players who have demonstrated what hard work, enthusiasm and sheer determination can achieve. Such is the high standard of play within the team, two of the girls will be applying to US universities for a tennis scholarship, proving that sporting prowess can also pay dividends outside of the sports arena.”Published: January 3 2017
