Culford Tennis Academy Ranked First Co-Ed in the UK

Culford School’s Tennis Academy has been ranked as first co-educational school in Great Britatin by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) for 2016.

This is no surprise as the academic year 2015/16 was Culford’s most successful in tennis, beating achievements of any previous year on both team and individual level. Noteable achievments included pupil Harry Wendelken’s victories in the 14 and Under National Championships, winning both the Singles and Doubles and the 14 and under Road to Wimbledon Championships, again winning both singles and doubles.

Culford’s Year 10 boys were crownded the National Tennis Champions in December 2015 which is the most prestigious National title ever won by the School. Pupils Kira Reuter and Abby Taylor also won the 15 and Under Girls ISTA Independent Schools National Ttitle, with pupils Emily Sim and Lizzie Pam also reaching the semi-finals.

Culford have continued to build on their 2015/16 success with many more tennis triumphs in the 2016/17 academic year. In November, Senior School pupil, Kylie Bilchev, won the prestigious Suffolk Sport Young Sports Personality of the Year Award. Alongside this tremendous achievement, Kylie flew out to Florida in December, competing in two tournaments and coming away with a ranking of 9th in Europe. Also in December 2016, the U13 Girls’ Tennis Team competed in the AEGON Schools National Championships earning themselves a well deserved 2nd place.

The most recent success Culford has seen is Harry Wendelken becoming an Under 16 Great British champion. He recently took part in the Tennis Europe Winter Cup by HEAD, alongside his team. With his team mates securing their wins, Harry defeated his opponent (6-3 2-6 6-4) and sealed the deal for Great Britain.

Culford currently has around 100 pupils in the High Performance ,Performance and Development programme. The tennis programmes are managed by Jamie Yates, Level 5 Master Performance Coach and Hills Road Cambridge HPC Manager. Jamie is supported by a team of 14 qualified LTA Coaches who specialise in working with Tennis performance players, three strength and conditioning coaches, and nutritional support from Sarah Schofield.

Culford’s Tennis Programme pupils are looking forward to many more competitions this term including a training camp in La Manga, ITF events in Qatar and a tournament in Croatia. We wish them all good luck.
