Published on isbi School News dated Monday 6th of March 2017

Lancaster Royal Grammar School's position as one of the top state grammar schools in the country was endorsed by a recent Ofsted inspection which rated the school as 'Outstanding' across all categories for boarding. Following a rigorous, zero-notice inspection by Ofsted in January 2017, boarding at LRGS has again been rated as ‘Outstanding’ in all areas, including: The overall experiences and progress of children and young people, the quality of care and support, how well children and young people are protected and the impact and effectiveness of leaders and managers. Headmaster Dr Chris Pyle said: “We are delighted with the glowing comments in this report. It paints an extremely positive picture of the boarding community at our school. The inspectors spent a lot of time speaking to our boarders in all year groups, and it is excellent to be reminded that they gain so much from boarding at LRGS.” He added: “I am hugely grateful to our Head of Boarding, the Housemasters, and all of the matrons and boarding staff. We remain ambitious to make continued improvements to provide the best possible care and education for every single boarder.” The Ofsted report highlighted that pupils make excellent progress in their educational, moral, social and cultural development. Staff were recognised as being unreservedly committed to pupils’ welfare. Inspectors commented that; ‘Pupils live in a multi-national and inclusive boarding community; Pupils develop tolerance, understanding and respect. Pupils unanimously speak positively about their enjoyment of their boarding experience. They develop meaningful friendships enjoy the varied activities and feel safe and secure.’ They praised the embedded culture of mutual respect operating in the school with behaviour seen to be exemplary. A parent said: “Through his experiences in boarding, we have witnessed our son’s personality develop and his confidence grow, resulting in a measured, self-assured teenager who knows his own mind, yet respects the views and opinions of others. He has developed the ability to get along with everyone, to share and to unquestioningly accept difference.” The inspectors noted that ‘leadership and management are exceptional. The Head of Boarding provides effective leadership to the staff team and drives the culture of educational progress, respect and valuing diversity. Senior leaders are confident, inspirational and ambitious, leading by example, demonstrating a respect for others and a humility that pervades the whole’.
