Egham Musician of the Year
Camila Fernandez, aged 12, has recently been crowned ACS Egham’s ‘Musician of the Year’ with her rendition of ‘Wayfaring Stranger’ by Johnny Cash.
Altogether, 24 students, aged 10 to 18, took part in the all-day competition, which had three categories for different experience levels. Alongside vocal performances, a wide range of instruments were played, including the piano, drums, electric guitar, flute, and violin.
Camila, winner of the title, commented:
“I really enjoyed performing and I feel so proud to have won, especially as the competition was so high with everyone playing impressively well.”
World renowned pianist and chamber musician, James Kirby, was the guest adjudicator. James performs regularly throughout the UK and Europe and teaches at the Royal Welsh College in Cardiff, Royal Holloway and the University of London. He is also an Honorary Professor at the Rachmaninov Institute in Tambov, Russia.
Ty Holt, aged 10, won the ‘Lower School Musician of the Year’ with his piano rendition of ‘I’m an Old Cowhand’ by Johnny Mercer. Other winning performances included Ava Jochim’s vocal piece of ‘My Name is Tallulah’ from Bugsy Malone; Lukas Juen’s piano arrangement of ‘Libertango’ by Astor Piazzolla; and Sara al Kaisi’s, Jimena Madera’s and Iris den Broeder’s vocal trio performance of ‘Dona, Dona’ by Secunda.
Irina Walters, Music Coordinator at ACS Egham, commented on the annual competition:
“I am so proud of all the students who performed, the competition was a real testament to the exceptional musical talent we have at the school. It was such an honour to have James Kirby adjudicate and I know our students were inspired by his presence.”
