Hazlegrove riders are NSEA National County Show Jumping Champions
Four Hazlegrove riders headed from Somerset to Buckinghamshire with great excitement to compete in the NSEA (National Schools Equestrian Association) National Finals. The children had qualified for this event by winning the Somerset County Finals back in October.
Arriving on Friday, Josh, Emily, Jack and Anna and their ponies had time to get used to their surroundings and take part in a ‘warm-up event’ before main competition. All four riders had good clear rounds in that warm-up class and enjoyed some success with Josh finishing 2nd and Emily 7th before settling down for the night. The next morning saw everybody up bright and early ready for the Championship class that started at 8am.
There were 22 schools teams, with 4 riders in each team, all of whom had won their county finals and were representing their respective counties. The competition consisted of two rounds – the first in an outside ring and the second a timed round in the indoor area. The Hazlegrove riders completed the first round well, finishing on a team score of 4 faults which set them up nicely for the second round.
The indoor arena was proving very challenging and the Hazlegrove team headed into it with nervous anticipation. However, they certainly showed the rest how to do it and rode superbly, with three team members all jumping clear in very quick times. Having been drawn to ride mid-way through the competition, the children then had to spend the next few hours on the edge of their seats watching the other teams jump before it was announced that they had won.
Needless to say, Josh, Emily, Jack and Anna are thrilled to be National County Champions and now have the exciting prospect of representing England in the NSEA Nations Cup to look forward to in October. Published: May 4 2017
