Pupil success in mathematics challenges

Nearly 190 Millfield pupils took part in the UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge, a national competition for students in Upper Sixth and below which involves solving 25 multiple choice mathematics problems in 90 minutes.

Ninety-one of our pupils received certificates, of which 8 were Gold, 25 Silver and 58 Bronze.

Around 1000 of the best scorers in the country at this event were eligible to take part in the first round of the British Mathematical Olympiad which has six problems to tackle in 3.5 hours. Max French (Year 10) and Yuhka Machino (Year 9) both qualified and scored very well for their ages.

The next best 3000 students in the country took part in the Senior Kangaroo. Lauren Edwards (Lower Sixth), James Gillie (Upper Sixth), Thomas Goldie (Lower Sixth), Emily Li (Upper Sixth) and Peter Chan (Year 10) qualified and took an hour long paper. Peter received a Certificate of Merit in this competition as his result was in the top 25%.

At school level, Max French (Year 10) and Yuhka Machino (Year 9) tied to be awarded the best in school certificate and best in year certificates were awarded to James Gillie (Upper Sixth), Lauren Edwards (Lower Sixth) and Katie Maddock (Year 11).
