New indoor riding arena unveiled

Headmaster, Craig Considine opened Millfield's new indoor riding arena alongside Chairman, Roland Rudd.

The state-of-the-art structure, which is approximately 2.3 times larger than its predecessor, took six months to build and adds to the growing high-tech facilities and equipment on offer to riders. It has a fabric roof making it possible for Millfield riders to practice in daylight, with diffused natural light and a modern LED system for night time riding.

Veterinary research indicates that horses stay sounder and perform better if they work on a variety of different surfaces. As a result, the indoor arena has been constructed using Martin Collins Activ-track which provides an alternative to the adjacent new outdoor facility’s Eurotrack surface.

Given its additional size, the space can be divided into two large training areas, allowing a greater number of riders to use the facility at the same time. Approximately 70% of training will take place in the new arena, and a dividing fence can be removed for competitions and displays. There is also the potential for two dressage arenas to be set up side by side.

Danny Anholt, Director of Equestrian Sport at Millfield, said: “Our new indoor arena is a fantastic addition to the riding programme at Millfield. This exciting initiative ensures that Millfield Equestrian remains the leading school equestrian facility, with over 60 horses stabled and nearly 20 coaching and support staff on site.”

This is the latest in a line of enhancements to the riding facilities at Millfield and Millfield Prep. In 2014, Millfield Prep opened its cross-country course which plays host to the annual Millfield British Eventing Horse Trials.

The Millfield Institute Sport and Wellbeing continues to enhance rider training with tailored strength and conditioning sessions and the use of Pixio robot camera technology. Linked to wristwatches, Pixio follows pupils through their training sessions and tracks progress.
