BBC Big Band director Barry Forgie leads Jazz Band masterclass
After their sold-out concert in the Johnson Hall the previous night as part of the International Concert Series, the director of the BBC Big Band, Barry Forgie, hosted an afternoon rehearsal with Millfield’s Jazz Band.
The charismatic director worked with the band on two pieces that they are currently working on, ‘Blue Skies’ and ‘Skyfall’. With great energy, Barry shared his valuable experience with the ensemble, who attended the concert the night before. At the concert, members of the band had particularly enjoyed the celebration of the infamous divas of the big band world, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee and Billie Holliday, performed by Claire Martin OBE.
During the masterclass, Barry worked particularly closely on tightening the rhythm of the band and challenged the group to take more risks and to explore new jazz concepts.
The session was a fascinating insight into the workings of a professional big band and the ensemble’s sound was greatly improved for the experience. Published: December 14 2017
