Millfield wheelchair tennis player dreams of Wimbledon success
Millfield wheelchair tennis player, Lower Sixth pupil Lewis Evans from Wells, has been selected as one of only 16 players in England for the LTA’s (Lawn Tennis Association) Junior Future Programme.
Seventeen year old Lewis, who joined Millfield in September 2018 and is Millfield’s first competitor in the sport, is currently nationally ranked for his age group and receives specialist coaching at the school.
As part of the LTA programme, Lewis takes part in regular training camps at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton with other junior players who have shown talent from the existing and future junior player pathways.
Lewis’ current training programme includes six on-court sessions per week with a specially trained coach, as well as following a Strength and Conditioning Programme to work on both tennis specific aspects as well as general strength, mobility and flexibility work. Lewis also works with the school’s Physiotherapist.
Tennis coaches at Millfield have developed the programme even further to support Lewis, including attending wheelchair CPD (Continuing Professional Development) classes and working with national high-level wheelchair tennis coaches at events and at Millfield.
Lewis says, “When I was looking at pursuing my tennis, it was clear that Millfield was the right place. I’m really enjoying such a high-level environment, where my dream of playing at international level in the quad division can hopefully be achieved, and I’m really proud to pave the way for others to pursue tennis at the school.”
Millfield’s Director of Tennis, Kate Warne-Holland says, “We’re delighted that Lewis is a trailblazer for wheelchair tennis players here at Millfield, and I personally could not be prouder of Lewis’ success and development, even in the short space of time that he has been with us. I hope others will hear Lewis’ story and be inspired to chase their goals, in whatever field.”
Lewis' story will be featured on BBC Somerset and BBC Points West during the Wimbledon fortnight.Published: July 5 2019
