Eltham College was founded in 1842 as the School for the Sons of Missionaries. It now enjoys a beautiful setting in Mottingham, south-east London, centred on a fine 18th century mansion surrounded by 42 acres of playing fields. Headmasters are members of HMC, and the College was at one time a Direct Grant Grammar school. There are 835 pupils in the School, including 61 girls in a Sixth Form of 209. A Junior School of 218 boys is attached. The atmosphere is friendly and purposeful, a concern for pastoral care going hand in hand with high achievement. The academic reputation of the College is well established, with the tradition of scholarship being reflected in 'A' level and GCSE results. On average 15% of the Upper Sixth gain entrance to Oxford and Cambridge, and almost all leavers move on to university. A particular strength is that the school is not too large and all pupils can be recognised and valued as individuals, while at the same time the school's achievements are on a par with even the biggest educational institutions.
Since the days of Olympic gold medallist Eric Liddell, the College's reputation for sporting achievement has been high, and a wide range of options is available, the College possessing an excellent Sports Centre with a swimming pool and astro-pitch; it is also a centre of excellence for Cricket. Over the past ten years Music has become a major focus at the school, with all pupils in the Junior School having free lessons on a variety of instruments. In the Senior School the new Music School has been the base for over 30 different ensembles, and the Trebles have been engaged in professional concerts including singing with the LSO at the Barbican and St Paul's Cathedral with international engagements in 2010/11. Traditions in the other Creative Arts are similarly outstanding, with Drama, Art and Design each drawing enthusiastic involvement and vitality to a variety of events each year.
There are many extra-curricular activities on offer, and the school is proud of its extensive range of trips abroad organised every year (most recently China, Mexico and the Galapagos). Mandarin has taught in the Junior School for 3 years and exchange trips to Beijing/Tianjian are planned for 2011. The College also partakes in exchanges with 6 schools in Europe. The Community Service scheme, which includes all Lower Sixth formers, is highly respected in the area, while Outward Bound courses, leadership training and expeditions abroad are part of the annual activity for pupils of all ages.
The most recent Inspection report highlighted the wonderfully rich experiences available to all pupils at the school and the positive relationship between staff and pupils.
