A word from the head
Highgate combines the best of both worlds: close to Central London yet with extensive playing fields and next to Hampstead Heath. At all levels academic standards are high and emphasis is put upon enthusiasm for learning, self-confidence and independence of thought. There is an unusually wide range of extra-curricular activities. Music, Drama and the Arts are prominent and there are many plays, concerts and exhibitions throughout the year. More than thirty music groups practise and perform regularly. Outdoor activities are encouraged and besides the excellent games (and facilities for them), the school owns a cottage in North Wales. Pupils of all ages use this facility for holiday and educational visits, expeditions and field work.
The Senior School is situated in Highgate Village and has been there since 1565. In recent years the buildings have been extended and modernised. The playing fields are a few minutes walk away. Besides music and drama, there are more than thirty societies and clubs meeting on a regular basis as well as the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Young Enterprise, and the Combined Cadet Force. The Junior and Pre-Prep schools are situated in a very agreeable environment surrounded by playing fields and with the use of all the school’s facilities. From age eight pupils are encouraged to stay after school for clubs and other activities and those of all ages may have breakfast at school with their families. From the earliest years children experience exciting outings to places of interest and project work is enhanced by visits from specialists in the relevant field. Prominent children’s authors also visit the school and for the older children there are visiting speakers.
Entry to the Pre-Prep is at age 3 and application should be made immediately after the child’s first birthday to the Principal, Highgate Pre-Preparatory School, 7 Bishopswood Road N6 4PH (020 8340 9196) Pre-prep@highgateschool.org.uk.
