A Word from the Head
Putney High School is known for providing the challenge of a rich and broad education to bright girls from 4-18. Girls develop the self confidence they need to take full advantage of opportunities open to them in life, the courage to take intellectual risks and the critical thinking skills to make sound judgements about the world around them.
We are proud of the high academic achievements of our girls, with many accepting places at popular universities including Oxford and Cambridge.
However, we place equal importance on ensuring we are a friendly school with a distinctive caring ethos which nurtures support and respect.
Established in 1893, the school is located on a green, tranquil site close to the heart of Putney. Our facilities in the Senior Department include a state-of-the-art new library, newly developed language lab, music ICT composition rooms, seven well-equipped Science Laboratories, excellent Art Studios, a Design and Technology Centre, a superb Sports Hall, a newly refurbished Drama Studio and extensive ICT facilities.
2011 sees the opening of a state-of-the-art new Sixth Form Centre with a diner, cyber cafe, rooftop terrace and fitness suite.
Our on-site Junior Department, Lytton House, is equipped with a Hall and specialist Science facilities as well as an Art/CDT Studio, a large ICT suite and a large Library.
The broad curriculum in the Senior Department includes Classics, Latin, Modern Languages including Mandarin, and Design Technology. For GCSE, all girls study Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as English Literature, English Language and Mathematics. They also choose four subjects from a varied list which includes Art, Classical Civilisation, Design Technology, Textiles, Drama, French, Geography, German, Greek, History, ICT, Latin, Mandarin, Music, Physical Education, Spanish and Religious Studies.
At AS and A Level, these choices expand yet further, to include, for example, Business Studies, Economics, Government and Politics and History of Art. A varied Enrichment Programme broadens interests and skills.
The Junior Department provides a secure and encouraging environment where girls grow in skills and confidence. A warm relationship is established with each family so parents and staff work together. A cross-curricular approach to learning is adopted. Visits to places of interest, concerts, museums, art galleries and theatres feature strongly. Wide opportunities capture the girls’ unlimited enthusiasm, enabling them to explore and extend their natural talents.
Putney is renowned for its musical excellence throughout both Junior and Senior departments. Likewise, the school is nationally renowned for its sporting achievements. Our grounds have tennis and netball courts and a rounders pitch. These are complemented by regular use of Putney Pool and Fitness Centre, Bank of England swimming pool and Roehampton playing fields. The fortunate position near to the river means girls are also keen rowers and there is a thriving rowing club.
Well-qualified, specialist staff provide continuity of education and community from Reception through to A levels. However, girls are welcome to enter the school at any point, should a vacancy arise, in addition to the traditional entry points of 4+, 11+ and 16+.
Open Days are held in October. Please visit our website, www.gdst.net/putneyhigh, for more details.
