A Word from the Head

Specialising in providing a personalised approach to learning and development, Portfield School in Dorset is committed to achieving the highest standards of education and care.

A non-maintained special school for children and young people aged 3-19 on the autism spectrum and with associated learning and developmental difficulties; Portfield is registered for 70 students and offers daily education and flexible boarding for up to 52 weeks. Each student’s curriculum and care plan is individually designed to reflect their abilities and personal development needs.

The school is managed by local charity The Wessex Autistic Society, a voluntary organisation which aims to ensure that all people with autism and related conditions in the region have access to appropriate education, care, support, and development services.

Registered by OFSTED as a children’s home and judged as Outstanding in February 2011, Portfield School is able to offer flexible and personalised boarding packages from 39 to 52 weeks per year. Four modern purpose-built residential boarding houses are located on the main school site at Parley in Dorset and one post 16 residential house in the Christchurch community.

In a context of security, enjoyment and respect, Portfield School aims to prepare young people to enter adulthood equipped to maximise their independence and quality of life and to engage in their communities as active citizens. Participating and engaging in the local community is a part of the curriculum at Portfield along with a wide range of lessons and activities that promote independence. Staff training is given a high priority within the school, and issues around child protection and increasing students’ skills and knowledge of how to stay safe are given particular focus.

Our approach to education is individualised, proactive and personal. Children learn from highly trained and experienced teaching staff who create a personalised curriculum tailored to individual strengths and needs. Dedicated to creating a calm, engaging environment and developing pupil’s social and independent skills, we understand the need to know how autism uniquely impacts on the personal development of each student.
