Derby High School is an independent GSA day school which caters for the 3-18 age range. The school is made up of three separate buildings. The Kindergarten caters for children up to the end of Year 2, the Junior School caters for pupils in Years 3-6 and the Senior School covers the 11-18 range. The Kindergarten and the Junior School are both co-educational and the Senior School is for girls only. There are 300 girls in the Senior School and approximately 260 children in the other two schools.
In the Kindergarten children broadly follow the National Curriculum and their work is supported by a range of out of school visits. Music and drama also feature strongly and all the Kindergarten children take part in the Nativity and, in the summer, the Kindergarten musical. As the children move to the Junior School the range of opportunities increases. Sport for all is strongly encouraged, with a wide range of sports offered to both girls and boys. A broad range of lunchtime activities is also on offer. Small classes with experienced and well-qualified staff help the boys and girls to achieve excellent SATS results at the age of 11.
In the Senior School girls follow a broad and balanced curriculum and the school has an enviable record of high academic achievement. At the same time girls are actively encouraged to exploit the opportunities available to them in music, drama, sport and outdoor pursuits, activities which develop teamwork and leadership skills. The vast majority of girls continue into the Sixth Form, where their greater freedoms are balanced by our greater expectations of them in terms of leadership, responsibility and setting an example to younger girls.
The school is a Christian foundation, emphasising tolerance, sensitivity and understanding towards others. At the same time it reflects the multi-faith and multi-cultural environment in which it is situated: pupils of other faiths and traditions are welcomed, as are those of no faith. The size of the school enables the staff to get to know the children well and the school is proud of the quality of its pastoral care. All the children are valued as individuals and their talents, wherever they lie, are supported, valued and nurtured.
