A Word from the Head
The School was established in 1883 as part of a Foundation dating back to 1552 and moved to its present buildings and extensive grounds adjacent to King Edward's School (for boys) in 1940. The two schools have the same governing body, share a number of facilities and extra-curricular activities and have some joint teaching at sixth form level.
Pupils come from a large area of the West Midlands and a wide diversity of backgrounds. Means tested assisted places enable us to welcome girls from families who could not afford full fees. To keep the school available for academically able pupils from as wide a cross-section of the community as possible is a top priority.
The school is proud of its fine academic tradition. Year by year its success rate, in terms of public examination results and entry into higher education, is amongst the best in the country and the range of careers followed by former pupils is constantly expanding.
Success is not however measured solely in terms of examination achievement: the school celebrates scholarship beyond the confines of examination courses. Cultural, spiritual, creative and aesthetic awareness are nurtured and opportunities abound for the development of special talents in music, drama, dance, and other pursuits. Stress is placed on the need for individual responsibility and self-discipline within the school and wider community.
School is not seen as merely a preparation for a next stage, but as a vital experience in itself, where a love of study and creativity is fostered.
