King’s is a co-educational senior school in Somerset covering Years 9 to 13, with students joining in Years 9, 10 and 12. Founded in 1519, at King’s we provide our students with a modern education in a traditional, rural setting. The strong sense of community is bolstered by the 7 day a week boarding where boarders and day pupils are always welcome.
The friendly relationships between students of different ages and with staff are very apparent. This is due both to the outstanding pastoral care noted by a recent Ofsted inspection, and to the strong Christian ethos which allows all students, Christian and otherwise, to explore their own beliefs. At the centre of our community are the seven boarding houses, each in the care of a housemaster or housemistress whose prime concern is the well-being of their charges. Matrons and old pupils also play a role in welcoming new arrivals. We have a strong peer mentor programme in which pupils volunteer to assist each other.
We has remarkably strong academic results given the non-selective admissions process. Almost all students continue to tertiary education, with over 40% attending Russell group universities. A dedicated Learning Support Unit and a Gifted and Talented programme cater for students of all levels.
Non-academic interests are supported by an extensive extra-curricular programme which uses professional coaches to help students develop their individual skills, boosting their confidence both in and out of the classroom. There is a wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer, from CCF and Duke of Edinburgh to Arabic and jazz dancing. The social aspect of boarding life is equally important, and the Junior Common Room and 6th Form Club both play a part in this with students organising their own social events. Day pupils will often come back into school on weekend evenings to spend time with their friends.
