A Word from the Head
Set in its own beautiful and quiet grounds the Senior School is centred around two traditional and characterful houses, with a bright modern Junior School close by on the same site. Excellent facilities include four well equipped Laboratories (one in Junior House), Libraries, specialist areas for Information and Communications Technology, Business Studies, Music, Geography, History, Languages, Home Economics, Art and Drama Studios, two large Sports/Assembly Halls, all weather Tennis and Netball Courts, Hockey field and Athletics area. A new Sport England standard Sports Hall opened in Spring 2009.
Music is particularly strong, with several Choirs and much instrumental teaching. Art and Theatre Studies are popular subjects; school plays and art exhibitions flourish. The extra-curricular programme is full and varied, including the Duke of Edinburgh, Young Enterprise and Step Into Sport schemes, and trips abroad.
The age range is 3 to 18. Entry to the School is by assessment and interview for younger pupils and St Mary’s Entrance Examination for older girls. Most Junior children move on automatically into Senior House at 10. Scholarships are available at 7+, 11+ (including one for Music) and in the Sixth Form for academic excellence.
Annually the public examination results are excellent and all girls go on to Higher Education. At least 20 subjects are offered at both GCSE and A level. There is a comprehensive Careers Service in the Senior School, with vocational guidance tests and interviews, visits and talks. The Careers Room is equipped with up-to-date computer software to enable girls to make University choices. Most girls study four subjects at AS level, continuing three or four subjects through to A2. In addition, all Sixth Formers take Key Skills Music, Physical Education, General Studies, Ethics and Careers.
There is specialist provision in Learning Support throughout the school and programmes of support/opportunities for Gifted and Talented pupils.
The watchwords at St Mary’s are ‘caring’ and ‘excellence’. St Mary’s is a School where each girl is known and valued, where talent is nurtured and confidence fostered but, beyond this, real academic success is within each girl’s grasp. Girls leave St. Mary's as strong, confident, happy individuals, fully prepared for the next stage in their adult lives.
Pastoral Care: Caring underpins education at St Mary’s; the atmosphere of warmth and ease is almost palpable; staff and girls alike exude friendly co-operation; compassion and concern for others is a guiding principle. The level of care for pupils was graded 'outstanding' in the most recent school inspection.
