A Word from the Head

Perse Girls aims to foster a love of learning, developing inquiring, reflective, open-minded young people, prepared for the opportunities of the twenty-first century and equipped to play an active role in an increasingly international world.

The School is dynamic and forward-looking and provides an exceptional environment in which girls with a myriad of talents and interests can thrive. It offers a first-class, well-balanced education celebrating achievement in all aspects of school life. Music, drama, sport and extra-curricular activities flourish and the School has all the advantages of a location in the centre of an ancient university city. Joint ventures with other schools, links with the local community and a very strong international dimension add to the real benefits of single-sex education.

The School has an outstanding academic reputation and excellent record of examination successes and university places. The curriculum retains the finest traditions whilst promoting new technologies and encompassing recent developments. All girls take courses to GCSE in English Language, English Literature, French, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics (or Double Award). In addition they select up to four optional subjects from a second modern language (German, Italian, Russian and Spanish) History, Geography, Religious Studies, Latin, Greek, Art, Design Technology, Drama, Music and Textiles. Information Technology is used across the curriculum to enhance academic work and the ECDL scheme is offered from Year 10. Non-examination courses in Religious Studies and Physical Education are compulsory.

From 2008 the School is opening a co-educational sixth form college on a new site. We’ve made a major investment to transform nearly 20,000 square feet of space, including the creation of brand new laboratories, a language centre and fantastic library facilities, as well as a new cafeteria and common room for informal study and relaxation.

The Stephen Perse Sixth Form College is an IB World School and offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme alongside A Levels.

All our students will have the opportunity to choose between A Levels and the International Baccalaureate’s Diploma Programme. Whichever route you choose, the quality of teaching and the resources available are the same. Students taking the A Level route choose 4 or 5 AS Level subjects for the Lower Sixth and may reduce this by one subject in the Upper Sixth. There are opportunities to take an additional AS Level in a new subject in the Upper Sixth and also to take other courses such as a Foreign Language at Work scheme (FLAW) during the sixth form years. Students on the IB Diploma Programme choose six subjects.

All students take a course in the Theory of Knowledge, helping them to understand the basis of learning and the methods by which knowledge in all curriculum areas is advanced. This introduction to some key ideas and new ways of thinking provides an invaluable foundation for study beyond the Sixth Form.

There is far more to sixth form life than academic work. Our ‘Creativity, Action and Service’ programme is a chance for you to engage in a range of exciting ventures that build on your existing strengths and abilities whilst also giving you an opportunity to try something new, broaden your horizons and benefit the
wider community.

The curriculum, throughout the School, is underpinned with careers education and guidance and great emphasis is placed on pastoral care and the well-being of all pupils. Established pastoral structures support the pupils and foster personal development and informed choice. Close links between the School and parents are valued.
