Founded in 1884 the School became a Charitable Trust in 1975. The Governors pursue a continuing commitment to provide a well-resourced school with small teaching groups for children from ages 3 to 13. The school is pleasantly situated on the borders of Epping Forest and is well served by public transport. Facilities are extensive with 8 acres of grounds, a large Sports Centre, a fully equipped Performing Arts Centre and Music School, a dedicated Art and Design Base and a new, purpose-built whole school Library and ICT facility.

Key characteristics of the school include well-qualified, dedicated staff, class sizes generally no more than 21 and a teacher:pupil ratio of 1:13.
Younger children are also supported by nursery nurses and teaching assistants (Nursery staff:child ratio 1:6). In addition, the school employs a full-time qualified nurse.

The school is non-selective at its main point of entry for children aged 3 and 4. There are assessment tests for older children, principally at ages
7+ and 11+. At age 11 pupils move on to a range of schools, mainly
selective independent and state schools. At 13+ pupils principally move on to independent public schools. Pupils gain a range of awards at both 11 and 13, including academic awards and scholarships in Sport, Technology, Science, Drama and Music.

The school has gained Artsmark status for the quality of its provision for Art, Drama, Dance and Music and has also been given the International School Award by The British Council. St Aubyn's is also an 'Investor in People'.
