After 99 years as a boys’ preparatory school, York House School started accepting girls into its Reception class from last September 2009.
In a radical move, which will change the dynamics of local private education, the popular Croxley Green School has announced it is becoming fully co-educational.
However, the move will be gradual. ¬Classes will only become co-ed as the first group of girls moves up through the school. Eventually York House aims to have an equal number of girls and boys.
Headmaster Peter MacDougall said: “Girls are not completely new to York House, as our Kindergarten has been open to both sexes for the last 15 years.
More and more parents have been asking if we could let their daughters stay on and I have always wanted to be able to keep them as we have so much more to offer than some of the other local schools. Now, for the first time, parents in Northwood, Rickmansworth, Chorleywood, Kings Langley and the surrounding villages have the chance to send their sons and daughters to the same local prep school.
This means that both boys and girls will benefit from the same excellent education. The real advantage is, of course, that the girls will now have access to the superb range of teaching, sports and other activities that York House provides.”
York House prides itself on its excellent academic record with many pupils gaining academic or sporting scholarships to their Senior schools.
With 47 acres of grounds, an indoor swimming pool, new Science Laboratory and Art, Design and Technology suite, the school is extremely well equipped and can cater for everyone’s abilities and interests.
