A school with a distinctive identity and tremendous energy, for over 400 years Oakham has been well established as a centre of learning with a long tradition of academic excellence. The spirit of innovation which led Oakham to be the first public school to become fully co-educational some thirty years ago and to be at the forefront of curriculum development has created an environment in which enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity flourish.
All Oakhamians are encouraged to develop the self-esteem and confidence to be independent-minded people who can readily adapt to the many different environments in which they are likely to find themselves in their future lives. We see five key Oakham ways to achieve this goal:
A BALANCED SCHOOL. Oakham has a profound belief in the benefits of genuine co-education (with equal numbers of boys and girls), of a balance between day pupils and boarders which offers benefits to both and of a concept of the balanced 'total' curriculum which gives young people breadth and depth. A balanced environment comprising many different personalities, skills and possibilities enriches understanding and opens up opportunity.
A MODERN SCHOOL. Oakham has a tradition of innovation shown notably in the early move to co-education, the introduction of the International Baccalaureate and curriculum development. The enormous building development programme of the last 20 years has given first-class facilities and modern resources. The focus of the School is on the present and the future. THE SCHOOL AS A FAMILY. Oakham has a friendly, unstuffy and open environment based on Christian principles. There is a high proportion of siblings amongst pupils and a high level of involvement from all staff, with easy communication between staff, pupils and parents.
A SCHOOL FOR CREATIVITY AND GROWTH. Interest, enthusiasm and excellence are encouraged across the broad range of activity available to pupils in intellectual and academic pursuits, cultural life, sport and service.
A SCHOOL FOR PREPARING PATHWAYS. Through the style of their education and, in particular, through the 7th form ideal, university guidance and careers advice, Oakhamians should leave the school fully capable of dealing with change and aware that the world owes them no favours and that they must shape their own futures.
