A Word from the Head

St Mary’s Calne is a boarding and day school for around 315 girls aged 11-18. Approximately 80% of the girls board and it is a rich boarding life with all girls taking part in the full-curriculum and extra-curricular activities on offer.

St Mary’s is committed to providing an education that will challenge and inspire its pupils, as well as helping them to achieve fantastic public examination results. In 2009, nearly 60% of the year group achieved three A grades at A Level, and at GCSE, more than half the year group gained at least 8 A*-A grades. This inspirational education is achieved through a cutting-edge curriculum which teaches Critical Thinking from the first year through to the end of the Sixth Form; which approaches each girl as an individual and tailors the curriculum to her needs, and which uses new initiatives such as enrichment weeks, when the lower school are off timetable and taking part in a range of cross-curricular activities, to offer a broad and fulfilling education.

As well as being noted for academic excellence, St Mary’s is renowned for its outstanding pastoral care. The school is small by design and it is a close and caring community where every girl is known and cared for as an individual. Every girl has a Tutor and in the Sixth Form a Director of Study, to support and guide her through every aspect of school life; from organisational skills and subject choices through to university application.

All girls go on to higher education, and the new Sixth Form Centre, a tailor-made lecture programme, a women in corporate culture conference, debating competitions, careers advice, leadership roles and much more, prepare the girls for university and beyond. Different opportunities give the Sixth Form girls independence, yet they remain an integral part of the school and are fantastic role models for the younger girls.

Beyond the classroom, 80% of girls play musical instruments; drama productions in the purpose-built theatre are of the highest standard, and all girls work for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award with large numbers going onto higher levels. The school is represented at county level in several major sports, nationally in athletics and lacrosse, and internationally in horse riding, with all girls taking advantage of the on-site fitness suite and 25m indoor pool.

It is the individualised approach to every aspect of school life that makes St Mary’s Calne special. For more information, please contact the Admissions Department on 01249 857206 or email admissions@stmaryscalne.org. Alternatively go to www.stmaryscalne.org.
