Great Houghton Hall is a mainly Georgian house (Grade II) just 2½ miles from the centre of Northampton. It benefits from being easily accessible while providing secure, rural surroundings of 27 acres in a conservation area. The school was founded in 1955 and now caters for boys and girls from the age of 12 months to 16 years as from September 2011. In August 2006 the school became part of the Girls' Day School Trust (GDST) but returned to private ownership in September 2010.
The school's aim is to provide an all-round education of high quality for pupils of all abilities, at an affordable cost. Its individual aim is 'to bring out the best in everyone'. This includes working together with parents to help their children achieve academic success, sporting prowess, excellence in music, art and drama, and all-round qualities such as courtesy, honesty and integrity.
GHS combines a very broad, inclusive approach with specialist expertise. The emphasis of the school is on the encouragement of the whole child in the classroom, on the games field, in relationships and through responsibilities. Our most recent ISI Report (January 2008) observed that the school: ‘succesfully fulfils its aims and this is reflected in the exceptionally caring community. Relationships are excellent and a happy and purposeful working atmosphere prevails. A strong start is provided in the Foundation Stage (judged 'Outstanding' by Ofsted in June 2007). This enables them, through the good progress they make, to achieve standards that are well above the national norms. Those requiring additional learning support fare very well because their needs are exceptionally well catered for.’
Most of our pupils have in the past, transfered to day or boarding, co-ed or single sex Senior Schools at 13+ via Common Entrance or Scholarship. These include: the Bedford Schools, Bloxham, Kimbolton, Malvern Girls College, Northampton High School for Girls, Northamptonshire Grammar School, Oakham, Oundle, Rugby, Stowe, Uppingham and Wellingborough. Form teachers and subject specialists maintain high academic standards in line with and beyond the National Curriculum. From September 2011 pupils will be able to remain at the school until the age of 16 years (GCSE).
In addition to archery, basketball, badminton, gymnastics, lacrosse and table-tennis in the gym, the grounds offer an all-weather surface, tennis courts and excellent pitches for: rugby, netball, hockey, football, cricket, athletics and rounders. The range of extra activities includes: art, ballet, band, chess, choir, choristers, cookery, dance, drama, individual music tuition, instrumental groups, Girls’ club, reading club and team training.
Nutritious lunches are cooked in the school kitchen, while breakfast and tea are available to fit in with parents’ busy lives: we are open from 08.00 to 18.00. A lively programme of social events complements regular charity fund-raising, directed amongst other worthy causes towards Outspan School, Kampala, Uganda, where we sponsor two pupils’ education.
The school has a contemporary outlook and a traditional ethos.
