Inspired for Life
"Since its foundation in 1514, Pocklington School has inspired generations of young people. Exciting opportunities and challenges in all aspects of school life enable individuals to develop the self-confidence necessary to go on to achieve their personal aspirations." Mark Ronan BA - Headmaster
We understand that education works best when all those responsible for a child's academic, personal and spiritual development share the same aims and values. To this end, our dedicated and enthusiastic staff strive to forge strong working relationships with each individual and with parents at every stage of their child's education. Our aim is to create a stimulating, safe and supportive environment that will inspire our pupils for life. Most of our pupils go on to study at university including Oxbridge.
FACILITIES
Throughout the school pupils learn in groups of 20 or fewer. In recent years Pocklington School has substantially improved its facilities. Projects completed include: Astroturf pitches, a new science laboratory, the refurbishment of the sports hall, the creation of a new computerized school library, an additional IT teaching facility, a cookery suite, a new purpose built senior boys’ boarding house (Fenwick-Smith House) in which all bedrooms are en-suite and a safe drop-off and parking area for day pupils. New CCF facilities constructed in partnership with the MOD were opened in 2009 together with new sports' changing room facilities and a purpose designed Sixth Form Centre.
BOARDING
Pocklington is committed to full boarding. Approximately 17% of our pupils are boarders. They live in five single sex boarding houses (these will become 4 houses from September 2011) located on or adjacent to the campus and enjoy full weekend programmes. The largest bedrooms accommodate 4 pupils or fewer. Each boarding house is run by caring, committed and well-trained staff for whom it is also their family home. Meals, including breakfast, are provided in a central dining hall on the campus. A wide choice of food is available at most meals and all visitors staff and pupils use the same facilities.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
The school has good playing fields, plenty of open space, astroturf pitches and a swimming pool. Pupils have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of sporting and co-curricular activities, including music and drama in a purpose built theatre, both during and after school. Boarders have their own special after school and weekend programme of social and house activities.
LOCATION
On a 64 acre campus on the edge of the small rural market town of Pocklington, 12 miles from York, 20 miles from Hull. For international pupils Manchester Airport (2 hours drive) offers good access via Amsterdam, Frankfurt or Heathrow to a large number of destinations. Leeds Bradford and Humberside Airports are also less than an hour’s drive from the school. The North Sea Ferry Service from Hull provides easy access to Northern Europe. Help with transport arrangements for holidays is available.
