Elstree is one of the UK's most well-established prep schools. Founded in 1848 but transferred in 1938 to its current 150-acre site in West Berkshire, Elstree provides a positive, stimulating and nurturing educational environment. The whole school comprises a Pre-Prep department called Home Farm (rated 'outstanding' for its EYFS provision in 2008) for boys and girls aged 3-7, and Elstree, for boys only, aged 8-13. Elstree offers full and flexi-boarding. Boys develop strongly in self-reliance and confidence through the boarding arrangements, preparing them admirably for life at senior school and beyond. Elstree also has day pupils.
Elstree believes that every pupil matters. We create here an atmosphere of clear guidance and academic rigour. The ethos of the school is based on sound Christian principles; the boys are expected to support and show kindness to one another, creating a happy and warm environment in which to grow. We strive too to help each child to achieve at the level of their own ability. Each boy has the opportunity to shine, to excel in his chosen fields, supported within a school framework well known for its relationships and pastoral care. Despite being academically non-selective, the school has sufficient strengths to inspire and motivate the most promising scholar. In addition, Elstree has a tradition of nurturing all its pupils and encouraging an interest in learning for its own sake. Elstree has an excellent record of success in Scholarship and Common Entrance to senior schools.
Every boy is encouraged to be active, fit and healthy. To that end, the school operates an extensive range of team sports and sporting activities to appeal to every child. Fencing, Judo, Shooting, Squash and Tennis complement the year-round sports of Rugby, Hockey, Cricket and Athletics. Gymnastics and Dance are also offered. Elstree seeks to foster a love for sport and open competition, providing high level coaching throughout their early years and building confidence to achieve success. A broad range of appealing hobbies and after school clubs also provide opportunities for creativity and independent thinking.
The Creative Arts at Elstree are also very strong, with 2 plays each year. Recent productions have included 'Great Expectations' and 'Joseph' as musicals and 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.' Over 80% of pupils learn a musical instrument and sit Associated Board examinations. Tuition is available in most orchestral instruments with some 15 visiting music teachers. Jazz and Choir singing are also particular strengths. The Art and Design Departments both regularly produce award-winning work for entrance to senior schools.
Responsibility for a boy's education is shared between the school, the parents and the child, in open and fruitful relationships. Regular contact with the school is encouraged, and written reports three or more times a term complement an enviable tutoring system.
