Farnborough Hill: The Caring Face of Academic Excellence

Farnborough Hill is a leading independent Roman Catholic day school for 500 girls aged 11-18. It welcomes girls of all Christian denominations, other faiths or no faith, who are supportive of the ethos. The school is proud of its academic record: last summer’s outstanding public examination results saw a 100% pass rate at A level, with a marvellous 84% of all results being at grades A or B and all students going to the university of their choice. At GCSE 63% of the results were at A* or A grades, with 98% of all the results at the top grades of C and above.

Although selective, the school does not cream off an academic elite, but achieves much academic success through excellent teaching and pastoral support. As stated in the ISI inspection report of May 2008, ‘the school aspires to academic excellence and to giving pupils a sense of fun and enjoyment in their learning. It amply fulfils both these aims’. The ISI report also confirms that Farnborough Hill ‘successfully fulfils one of its main aims, to educate the whole person in a happy, caring community in which each individual is valued.’ (May 2008) Opportunities are provided for the girls’ spiritual, academic, emotional, physical, moral and social development. The emphasis that Farnborough Hill places on the spiritual life of the school and on pastoral care and the personal development of its students was judged by the ISI inspection team to be outstanding.

The school’s impressive main house, once the home of Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, has had modern purpose built facilities added. These include a sports hall, indoor swimming pool, laboratories, IT suites, art and design technology centre, a chapel and extensive playing fields. The school has a strong tradition of excellence in music, drama, art and sport. Extra-curricular activities are an important feature of the school and they make a major contribution to the personal development of the students.

Students learn to value themselves as individuals and to develop independence of thought and action. ISI reported that ‘‘they are confident, without being over-confident; they are concerned for each other and for their fellow human beings; they become courteous and responsible young people.’ (May 2008) Visitors to the school often comment on the happy faces they see and the polite, kind and confident students they encounter.
