Magdalen College School, Oxford, was founded by William of Waynflete in 1480 as a grammar school for boys. It is now one of the highest achieving boys’ schools in the UK, earning the title of UK School of the Year 2004 from The Sunday Times.
For all boys the main ages of entry are 7, 9, 11, 13 or 16. Entry is academically competitive. At 7, 9 and 11 candidates take tests in English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning. Interviews and/or observations lessons are integral to the process. At age 13 candidates from independent preparatory schools take the Common Entrance examination, and candidates from state schools take tests in English, Maths, a modern language (usually French) and Verbal Reasoning. At age 16 entry depends on good GCSE results.
Almost all boys proceed to degree courses at universities including 25% each year to Oxford and Cambridge. There is a very high standard in music, art and sport with many boys playing at County level. There are two school orchestras, each of about 70 boys, as well as the choral society, madrigal group, a jazz band and chamber groups. About 10 concerts a year are given, some formal, some informal.
A former Direct Grant school and subsequently in the Assisted Places Scheme, Magdalen now offers bursaries to boys of good academic potential so that the school remains true to its grammar school tradition. Recent developments include a new Science Block (1991), increased technology and IT provision and the growth of the popular Junior School which now takes 7 year olds. The Colin Sanders Building (1998) houses several academic departments, the school art, careers and seminar rooms. A new £2,000,000 Sports Complex opened in July 2001. In 2002, a new Physics lab and ICT centre was established. The Sir Basil Blackwell Library opened in September 2005, situated at the very heart of the school. In 2008, the school will open a £5 million building housing a spacious refectory, porter's lodge, learning support, staff common room, and the art and design department.
