Greenacre School for Girls was established in 1933 by two exceptional young women. Both had a deep flair for teaching and a vision for a school that would provide not only excellent academic standards, but also an education tailored specifically to the needs of girls and young women. That vision is still central to the school today.
Greenacre is a medium sized school, large enough to offer variety, challenge and opportunities for all talents and interests, but small enough for each girl to be known as a unique individual, enabling her to realise her full potential. The school has a wide outlook, embracing the best of the nearby urban opportunities whilst being surrounded by countryside. The staff are highly qualified and committed to instilling the very best work habits in the girls and preparing them for an active role in the world. Greenacre is a human and sociable school in which girls of all ages, from 3 to 18, have the opportunity to develop fully, with all its resulting freedom and happiness.
Academic standards are high and the School offers a very broad curriculum at all levels, including 20 subject choices at both GCSE and A level. Class sizes are planned to allow teachers to respond to individual girls and their preferred learning styles. Teaching resources are modern, including extensive ICT facilities, interactive white boards and a language lab and learning support gives guidance on areas such as study skills and revision techniques as well as individual development.
Facilities have been considerably upgraded over recent years to include a Science block with large laboratories that allow regular practical teaching together with a Lecture Hall; the da Vinci building that includes Art, Textiles and Photography studios, a Music suite including a recording studio, drama room and dance studio, and a Food Technology room, a Humanities centre and heated swimming pool. The latest project is a new Sixth Form Centre incorporating a study area, common room, kitchen and garden.
Pastoral care is exceptional. Girls are known and treated as individuals. Staff and parents work in partnership to support and develop each girl. There is a discernible atmosphere of consideration, friendliness and compassion. Greenacre School is a very happy community that also values its links with the wider world, both locally and globally. The girls are encouraged to develop as responsible citizens and rounded individuals through many varied activities. Sport, Music, Drama and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme all involve large numbers of girls; fundraising events for nominated charities are imaginative and well supported, overseas trips varied and exciting and there are many opportunities to develop skills in public speaking, leadership and team work.
The original ethos of the school is still in place today and is shared by the new Headmistress, Mrs Redding. She says “I am delighted that Greenacre School continues to uphold and further these principals. Greenacre girls flourish in the School’s wonderful environment and atmosphere where an innovative and outward looking approach is aligned with a respect for traditional values. They emerge as articulate, confident and inquisitive, accomplished, yet considerate young women of whom we are rightly proud.”
