Box Hill School is a small community of 425 girls and boys aged 11 to 18. Its educational ideals and practice are designed to get the best out of each pupil. The school follows the philosophy of Dr Kurt Hahn, founder of Gordonstoun in Scotland. While placing academic work at the heart of a school, Hahn stressed the importance of all-round education as a preparation for life. He believed young people should be faced with challenges and responsibility. Central to Hahn’s ethos is the spirit of ‘having a go’, whether it be doing one’s best in academic work, performing on stage, scaling the climbing wall, or taking part in expeditions at home or abroad.

In 1966 Box Hill was one of the founder members of the international group of schools named ‘Round Square’ based on common ideals and a belief in pupil responsibility, service to others, outdoor adventure and international understanding. While internationalism has always been important in the school’s life, it is also a local school, very much part of the village of Mickleham, occupying a beautiful site in Surrey Green Belt countryside. The original Victorian mansion stands in 40 acres of grounds. The school has recently added a purpose-built music school which includes a recording studio, performance room and practice rooms.

We pride ourselves on a strong academic tradition based on small classes, good tutoring and a flexible curriculum that enables pupils to develop their own talents and interests. A varied activities programme includes not only the usual team games but also individual sports, skills, service to the community, and expedition training to enable over one hundred pupils to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

A graded system of responsibilities enables pupils to develop their initiative. In a small school there are numerous opportunities to represent the school in teams, in choirs and orchestras, to take part in plays and expeditions. Box Hill’s membership of ‘Round Square’ gives unique opportunities for international exchanges and service projects in adventurous parts of the world.
