Kingston Grammar School combines the best of traditional values with a modern and balanced approach to co-educational learning. The school has a fine academic record with all pupils going on to higher education, and regular successes at Oxford and Cambridge.

Its facilities are continuously being improved and a recent major building programme has provided a Library, Drama Studio, Art and Technology Centre, ICT Centre and Modern Languages Multi Media Centre. The Queen Elizabeth II building, opened by the Queen in November 2005, provides a Theatre, Music School, Drama Department, 6th Form Centre and 19 classrooms around a landscaped courtyard.

Academic success is important, but the boys and girls are encouraged to excel in every area of achievement, including sporting, musical and artistic pursuits. The school has a long tradition of supplying internationals in Hockey and Rowing, and possesses superb sports facilities at Hampton Court, including a boathouse, 2 astroturf hockey pitches and tennis and netball courts.

The strength of KGS is its emphasis on the 'family of the school' with education seen as a partnership between pupils, staff and parents. There is an active PSA and a carefully structured system of pastoral care, where each pupil has continuous contact with a tutor. Staff, pupils and parents participate in a comprehensive regular review of achievement and are able to closely monitor performance. Later in their careers all students receive very thorough advice on higher education.

The school encourages a plethora of other activities, including World Challenge Expeditions, foreign tours by sports teams (including hockey to Australia 2003, South Africa 2005 and New Zealand 2008, netball to Barbados 2008), together with music tours (Spain 2008) and trips to classical sites around the Mediterranean. There is a wide range of clubs and societies including a CCF unit.

We want pupils to leave the school able to adapt their talents to meet the needs of the modern world, whilst holding fast to the principles of self reliance, a sense of responsibility, courtesy and care towards others and a determination to seize opportunity. Whatever a pupil's talents it is the school's aim to discover them and develop them.

The motto of the school means 'work hard and be happy' which ideally sums up the KGS philosophy.

Alumni - Edward Gibbon, historian; R C Sherriff and Michael Frayn, Playwrights; Neil Fox, Capital Radio; James Cracknell, Gold Medallist Sydney Olympics 2000 and Athens Olympics 2004.
