An Independent Schools Inspectorate report in 2002 concluded: ‘Hawley Place is a good and successful school, which is excellently led.’ Inspectors, including the Director of the ISI himself, emphasized six major strengths of the school, made many other positive comments and found no major weaknesses. ‘This is a school where childhood is cherished in the Nursery, where Junior School pupils learn in classrooms full of colour and vitality and the Senior School pupils flourish in the attention they are given, and grow into well-educated, charming and quietly confident young women.’ Singled out for particular praise were: the quality of learning and behaviour, the quality of pastoral care, support and guidance, provision for the under fives, links with parents and the community, the ethos of the school and the leadership and management.
Recent developments include the Millennium Garden for Junior School pupils, a considerable investment in ICT to offer wireless technology and broadband internet access throughout the school, as well as four new teaching blocks: a) ‘Woodlands’ comprises two classrooms and a large hall for assemblies,Drama and indoor PE; b) ‘Firbank’ comprises four classrooms, two Music rooms, the Millennium Hall for school lunches, a new kitchen, staffroom and PE changing facilities; c) ‘Oakfield’ is a double classroom block, adjacent to a Learning Support Area, Nursery Office and Junior Library; d) The Gaskill Building, completed in September 2007 comprises: two science laboratories, an Art Studio and Home Economics facilities. Smaller recent developments include a Year 11 Common Room Lodge, together with an outdoor, covered decking area for Senior girls and a Junior Lodge, partly given over to the HPPA uniform shop.
The curriculum is broad and balanced. Modern Foreign Languages (French, German and Spanish) are much valued, together with ICT throughout the school. A wide choice of GCSE subjects is offered and during the five year period 2003 – 2007, an average of 97% of pupils gained 5 or more A*-C GCSE grades. The girls are well prepared for a multi-lingual, technological Europe with 75% of the 2007 cohort obtaining passes including Maths, English, Science, a Modern Foreign Language and ICT. Traditionally, all pupils move on to further education courses at private or maintained colleges.
Kindness, courtesy and consideration are fostered in all pupils, who are taught in small groups in a caring environment, based on solid Christian and traditional educational values. The school runs its own House System for academic achievement and competitive sport. Pupils are encouraged to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities covering music, drama and sport. Hawley Place pupils have enjoyed success in regional and national sporting Independent Schools Association (ISA) competitions in swimming, athletics and cross country running. Hawley Place has won the London West ISA swimming for three years running in the Junior boys and overall Junior/Senior girls sections. In 2007 22 swimmers represented the London West area in the National finals, helping the LW Area become the National Champions. Hawley Place has also enjoyed considerable success in Art and local Public Speaking Competitions for many years.
