Ardingly College Prep and Pre-Prep enjoy a beautiful and safe location in 420 acres of West Sussex countryside. As three schools in one College, Ardingly can offer its pupils a seamless education from 2½ to 18.
The Archbishop of York, whose son attended both the Prep and Senior school, recently celebrated with us 150 years of what he called “a very great college.” He praised Ardingly for, ‘taking pupils who may be just ordinary and turning them into extraordinary young people.’ We aim to develop the whole child and value communication skills, flexibility and initiative. Parents and pupils respect the fact that we foster good manners, citizenship and a sense of what is right.
Pastoral care and guidance were praised in our recent ISI Ofsted inspection as ‘outstanding.’ Children are cared for by Form Tutors, House Convenors and resident boarding staff. There is an emphasis on positively rewarding good behaviour, effort and attainment.
Ardingly is a friendly family school with strong academic credentials but which also encourages the all-rounder; for example we can teach three modern languages and Latin but also have time for drama, music, art, DT, ICT and daily sport. All pupils sit Common Entrance or Scholarship examinations and most go on to the Senior School.
Ardingly offers weekly and flexi boarding and this provision also benefits day pupils, who are able to take an active part in a wider extra-curricular programme. It is a significant attraction to busy parents who know their children are gainfully occupied after school hours. Prep is done at school and then pupils can have supper and take part in the many school clubs.
All children in the Prep and Pre-Prep benefit from the magnificent sports facilities of the senior school; we share playing fields, sports hall, tennis courts and the swimming pool. We are an Activemark Gold School (awarded by Sport England) with well-qualified staff delivering a broad programme of traditional girls’ and boys’ sports. We also offer golf, horse riding and water sports on the nearby Ardingly Reservoir.
Pupils also benefit from outstanding music tuition. More than half the music teachers have been or are involved in the UK’s top orchestras and choirs and children can choose from 23 instruments. Nearly 60% study an instrument and many play in the school orchestras, ensembles and jazz band and sing in the school choirs in Ardingly’s beautiful Chapel. A Christian ethos lies at the heart of Ardingly but we welcome children of all faiths and of none.
The Ardingly Pre-Prep and Nursery School, under the headship of Jeanne Adkins, is home to almost 100 pupils. The children enjoy their own separate part of the college. They work and play in beautiful and spacious award-winning buildings adapted around a former farmhouse and have extensive and well-equipped playground areas.
