A Word from the Head
“We can’t believe the difference in our daughter in just a few weeks. It’s been absolutely phenomenal, we can’t thank your staff enough.” Mr H
One of the great privileges of my role as Principal of Frewen College is to be the regular recipient of comments such as these from parents, who are quite often shedding tears of relief as they speak. Typically their children are of at least average intelligence, but they have been held back and made to feel worthless because their Specific Learning Difficulties have either not been recognised, or have not been properly addressed.
With 65 years experience of specialist teaching behind us at Frewen, we like to think we know what we are doing!
Our classes are tiny (usually 4-8), and our classroom staff, including LSAs, all have specialist training. Their experience, combined with input from our in-house therapists and counsellors enables us to tailor our teaching and support to each individual pupil’s needs. We celebrate their strengths and encourage them to believe there are no limits to what they can achieve, meanwhile teaching them how to cope with their difficulties and challenging them to overcome life’s obstacles. We boost their self belief and show them that school can be fun! And at the end of their time here, typically they will leave with 7 GCSE passes, and a place at College.
Our comprehensive website will tell you all you want to know about our outstanding rural location, excellent facilities, and exciting activities. We have real strengths in Art, ICT and Design & Technology, and pupils regularly achieve A* passes in these subjects. A full range of Games is offered, and Year 9 pupils are encouraged to enter the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. As part of our continuing development, this year we are building a mountain bike trail, an assault course, and a conservation area.
Pupil numbers continue to increase steadily, particularly girls, who have doubled in number in the past 18 months. We are extending our girls’ boarding house just 15 months after opening, and our Services pupils are also at record levels. As a result, this year’s Year 7 is full, and numbers for next year are filling rapidly, however we do have some space above and below this. Please see the website for more information, and details of our regular Open Mornings. We look forward to seeing you.
