Green Glory for St Margaret's

Children and staff at St Margaret's Preparatory School in Calne are celebrating after being awarded the prestigious 'Green Flag' part of the Eco-Schools initiative managed by Keep Britain Tidy.

Headmistress, Mrs Karen Cordon said 'The children are the driving force behind our commitment to sustainability - they form an important part of the school's eco-committee and the skilled and talented working party. The children help carry out audits to assess the environmental performance of the school and they decide which environmental themes they want to address and how they are going to do it.'

One project which has captured the imagination of the school is the creation of a wildlife garden. Initially, the children invited the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust to visit the school to advise how best to develop the area to create interest for them, but more importantly, to provide a safe environment for animals, insects and creatures. Mrs Cordon commented: 'The wildlife garden will give the children opportunities to further explore mini-beasts and habitats, as well as promoting their environmental awareness. It is a wonderful project for the whole school to be involved in and to watch evolve over the seasons.'

In support of St Margaret's commitment to re-cycling and bio-diversity, past fund-raising initiatives have included toy, book and dvd exchanges, a 'good as new' second hand clothes sale, autumn produce sales and plant exchanges. They have also introduced jute bags to reduce the use of plastic and they re-cycle their paper and cardboard throughout the school. A 'Green Day' proved very successful and the children thoroughly enjoyed learning about a diverse range of topics including food, energy, recycling and their carbon footprint.

The assessor from Keep Britain Tidy commented 'The school meets all of the Green Flag criteria, and is succeeding in having a while school approach to Eco themes. The eco committee and associated people are quickly sweeping all staff, pupils and parents along with their enthusiasm and using it to improve their school environment, increase learning opportunities and make sustainability an integrated ethos of the school.'
