World Famous Trumpeter Visits Barrow Hills

Published Monday 3rd of June 2013 11:38:08 AM

On Tuesday 12th March, the children at Barrow Hills School in Witley had the rare privilege of a visit by the world famous trumpeter, Crispian Steele-Perkins. He performed a varied musical programme using a cornucopia of trumpets covering a span of several centuries and demonstrated the fundamental principle of how a brass instrument works by performing an extract of Handel's Water Music on a hosepipe. Several staff and parents were also in the audience, as well as guests from Chandler School, with whom Barrow Hills enjoys close connections. Mr Steele-Perkins played music by Handel, John Stanley and Henry Purcell as well as playing theme tunes from many famous movie scores such as Superman and Star Wars. The children were given the opportunity to ask questions and we learned many interesting facts such as the fact that his cheapest trumpet cost £19 from e-Bay and his most expensive instrument is worth £8000. He encouraged the children to learn a brass instrument and told them he was their age when he began to play. Director of Music, Mark Wardell said, 'The children greatly enjoyed spending an hour in the presence of such an outstanding musician and will have undoubtedly been inspired by this most excellent presentation.'
