National Swimming Championships

Published by The Elms, Junior School to Trent College on Monday 17th of June 2013

On Friday 26th April, swimmers from The Elms took part in qualifying for the English Schools' National Swimming Championships at The Mere's Leisure centre in Grantham. Only the top three teams in each event would be chosen to represent both the East Midlands and their respective schools in the English finals at Ponds Forge, Sheffield on 15th June.

The boys' teams were made up of George Pygall, Ned Bosworth, William Airey, Ben Hutchinson and Alex Archer-Dyer. The boys competed in both the medley and freestyle heats, qualifying for both finals. The boys medley team qualified 3rd, securing their place for the finals in Sheffield. The freestyle team, although a faster by two seconds overall in the final, they were beaten to finish just outside the qualification places in 4th.

The girls' teams were made up of Poppy Fisher, Tilly Shaw, Liberty Mackintosh, Georgina Elder and Jessie Jardine. The girls were extremely competitive, putting up a great fight and swimming hard in both the medley and freestyle finals to reach the finals for both events. They swam harder and faster in the finals to not only secure both places in the English finals, but also to finish fastest in the East Midlands taking home very respectable trophies, shields and (big!) smiles from both events.

Well done to everyone who took part, you made your school very proud.
