Zena el Khalil, 1994 Alumnus and 2012 TED fellow, returns as special guest speaker for celebratory thanksgiving dinner

Zena el Khalil, an ACS 1994 alumni and fellow of the non-profit organisation, TED, which is devoted to spreading ideas, was the special guest speaker at the thanksgiving dinner, giving a talk on her latest book Beirut, I Love You.

After graduating ACS Cobham in 1994 and attending university, Zena returned to her home in Lebanon at the time when the country was experiencing intense conflict.

Witnessing and being directly affected by the conflict, Zena communicated her experiences in a variety of ways, including through conceptual art and her renowned blog The Beirut Blogger, which has become the basis of her book and is soon to be made into a film.

Through her artwork, Zena attempts to promote critical thinking, bring people together and build understanding across cultures.

As well as speaking at the thanksgiving dinner, Zena also spent the week as Artist in Residence, giving talks to current High School students about her experiences as well as the process of turning her book into a film.

Fran Bidwell, Special Programme Co-ordinator at ACS Cobham, commented on Zenas visit:

'Having Zena and the 1994 cohort return to ACS Cobham Boarding House for the 25th anniversary thanksgiving dinner, brought back many wonderful memories for both staff and students.

Ms. Bidwell also added:

It has been a pleasure to have Zena return to ACS Cobham for our 25th boarding house anniversary celebrations. Her talk was a truly inspirational insight into her experiences living in Beirut and how she has used her artwork and writing to make a positive change across cultures.
