At the Aegon National Schools Tennis Finals in Bolton, Merchiston's U15 team won first place, making them the UK Champions of Year 10 (S3) Teams. Follow the link for the final scores. In the Year 8 (S1) National Finals, Merchistons U13 players came second, also a remarkable achievement. The link to their final results is here: congratulations to Cheam High School, which came out top on the day at U13 (S1) level.

Merchistons U15 and U13 teams were amongst the final 16 teams from around 625 teams that originally entered this event. The other Year 10 (S3) Boys National Finalists were Reeds School, Repton School and Millfield School. The standard of tennis played by all of the finalists was extremely high and Merchiston was delighted to be successful in all of its U15 matches.

This is an outstanding achievement for Calum, Ewan, Philip, Douglas and Christopher, and their coaches Marcel du Coudray and Nathan Lundy. Merchistons Tennis Academy Head Coach, Marcel du Coudray, commented:

"Winning the Aegon Year 10 (S3) National Schools Tournament at the weekend is the culmination of six years work in the relentless pursuit of excellence by the boys. When we launched the Tennis Academy Scotland in 2007, Calum MacGeoch was the youngest entrant and it was only fitting that he won the match to clinch the title on Sunday."

The Tennis Academy at Merchiston
Merchiston established Scotlands first Tennis Academy in 2007 with 12 boys and girls. Since then it has grown to around twice that size. These young players attend Merchiston and St George's Schools in Edinburgh (some boarding, some day pupils) where they pursue a full academic timetable while receiving a top class tennis programme, led by Head Coach, Marcel du Coudray, using Merchiston's facilities. Students are invited to join the elite group within the Tennis Academy following a technical assessment. Pupils are provided with the best possible chance of making their tennis dream come true, and also gain a first-class education. The Tennis Academy is an integral part of the Tennis Scotland Performance Plan, the aim being to develop successful international tennis players. It is the first partnership in Scotland to provide specialised tennis training and a high level education with a specially adapted curriculum. For any aspiring sporting talent there is always the challenge of balancing the dedication required for sporting excellence with the need to gain a strong education. Merchiston has had great success including achieving the accolade of Scottish Schools Tennis Champions earlier this year.

The Golf Academy at Merchiston
As a school steeped in sporting excellence, Merchiston launched its own Golf Academy in 2011. This academy represents a unique opportunity to study at a school which consistently achieves high levels of top grade pass rates at A level and GCSE, and to experience a specialized individual coaching, conditioning and competitive participation programme in golf. Still in its infancy, this academy is already nurturing the stars of tomorrow. The Independent Schools Golf Association standings rated Merchiston as the top school in Scotland, and number four in the UK, for golf at the end of the 2012/13 season.
