Thorpe House appoints new Headmaster for September 2014

Thorpe House Schools Headmaster, Anthony Lock, will be retiring at the end of this school year making way for newly appointed Headmaster, Terry Ayres. Anthony has been at Thorpe House for 15 years and has seen many changes take place during that time including the opening of the Senior School in 2006 and the merger of Kingscote School and Thorpe House in 2012. He announced his decision to leave at the start of the school term in September:

It is going to be a great wrench to leave the school at the end of this academic year, but I will leave with many happy memories and a sense that I have left my mark upon the school. However, retirement has its own attractions and I am looking forward to being able to do some travelling outside of school holiday times. Leaving is made much easier through having the knowledge that I will be handing over to Terry Ayres who I know will be a great custodian of the schools future.

Terry Ayres is currently Deputy Head at Saint Nicolas School, a mixed independent school in Old Harlow, Essex so he is very familiar with the dynamic of a school of Thorpes nature, and the importance each separate section plays to the schools overall success. He is also used to the special atmosphere that exists within a small school and how that caring for, and having an interest in, each pupil as an individual has to be central to everything else that goes on. Before taking on the role of Deputy Head at Saint Nicholas, he was previously Head of the Prep section and taught in all sections of the school as well.

Thorpe House is a very special school which has a unique family feel and I am delighted to be appointed as the next Headmaster. What appeals to me most is the size of Thorpe which I feel is an essential facet when choosing a school for your children. It is small enough to provide a truly tailored learning experience for its pupils but big enough to supply the breadth of experience essential to prepare young gentlemen for the next steps in their academic journey. I am incredibly excited by the prospect of working alongside the staff, pupils and parents and continuing the excellent work done by Mr Locke in moving the school forward.

Thorpe House staff, parents and pupils were told of Anthonys decision to retire at the beginning of autumn term and whilst the news was greeted with great sadness, there was also a feeling of excitement at the changes a new Head will bring.
