World-renowned authority on Italian Renaissance painting, Professor David Ekserdjian delivered a richly-illustrated and entertaining lecture to Oakham School's Arts students on Tuesday.Professor Ekserdjian spoke about the key art works that he has 'discovered' during the course of his career his 'Desert Island Discoveries'.
He explained how academic scholarship and the insightful use of a sharp visual memory has enabled art historians to discover lost works of art and to reunite original artists' sketches with final paintings and engravings.
His personal reminiscences brought a refreshing view of how exciting the 'eureka' moments can be. He emphasised how even a well-researched field of study such as Western art is in fact ever-evolving.
Professor Ekserdjian teaches at Leicester University, is a past editor of Apollo and has published and lectured extensively. He has also curated major exhibitions such as the acclaimed Royal Academy 'Bronze' show (2012).
The School was privileged to host such a prestigious academic. Professor Ekserdjian brought Art History to life for our students, and he was certainly an inspiration for our future art historians.
