Heart Start Initiative Launched at The Royal Masonic School for Girls

Pre-Prep pupils from Cadogan House, the Preparatory Department of The Royal Masonic School for Girls have recently participated in a series of lessons as part of the Heart Start Programme. The programme is a British Heart Foundation initiative that aims to save lives in the community by teaching adults and children emergency life support skills.

The School has recently received official accreditation as a Heart Start School and the lessons are delivered by Sister Emma Royal who is a member of the Schools medical team. Sister Royal is delighted to see so many girls becoming competent and confident in how to react and what to do in an emergency situation.

Teaching the girls simple skills at this young age can really make a difference and can save lives.

The Year 2 pupils are now equipped with a set of skills which include; assessing a casualty, getting help and putting an unconscious casualty into the recovery position. The active hands-on approach appealed to all the pupils and they particularly enjoyed the role play when learning the new skills.

I know how to put someone into the recovery position! one enthusiastic pupil declared as she met her mum in the playground.

We hope that the girls will never be faced with such a situation but children are sometimes present at accidents and emergencies and, if theyre properly trained, are often as capable of applying Emergency Life Support.
As part of the initiative the school has also been supplied with several automated external defibrillators which staff have been trained to use if need be.

The Royal Masonic School for Girls prides itself on its distinctive ethos where girls experience an education that is rich, balanced and above all, happy. The simple skills taught through the Heart Start programme is just another example of how our pupils are being prepared for an ever changing world.
