Students and staff at ACS Hillingdon International School recently welcomed representatives from the Council of International Schools (CIS) to campus as part of a pilot CIS International Certification evaluation.

The pilot recognises the work of international schools in instilling global citizenship amongst students and the wider community.

ACS Hillingdon was invited to be part of the pilot due to its work to promote global citizenship through providing an international programme of study, including the International Baccalaureate.

The school was also awarded for its globally focused extra-curricular activities, as students last year won the CIS 'International Student Award' for supporting community projects at home and abroad.

Spending two days at the school, the CIS team spent time with teachers, parents and students, discussing the schools' understanding of the criteria for international certification. They also provided feedback on the pilot model before it is assessed and finalized as a new evaluation service for CIS member schools.

Head of School, Linda LaPine, commented:

'We are always encouraging students to become active global citizens, whether through their academic studies or personal contribution to good causes on a local and international level. As we continue to develop and evaluate our programmes, we were delighted to be part of the CIS International Certification pilot.

'I look forward to the CIS visit report, and working with other schools in the pilot to share ideas, and inform the certification so it truly celebrates the best in class global citizenship provision.'

Jane Larsson, CIS Chief Executive added:

'With its strong reputation in the provision of international education, ACS Hillingdon is an ideal candidate to take part in our pilot and provided a rich demonstration of the meaning of global citizenship as shown by many in the community.

'We developed this service to explore, in the words of our school leaders, 'what we really want to be talking about', aspects of leadership and institutional approaches that enable the development of students as culturally literate, competent global citizens. Together with the ACS Hillingdon school community and others, we are designing a process by which the outcomes of a school's work in this area may be developed through a purposeful, collaborative network of diverse schools, recognised, supported and challenged to go further.'
